Hi, I'm Patrick, a Gulf War veteran who has faced PTSD and mental health challenges from years of trauma. In 2021, while camping on a 5,000+ foot mountain, I hyperfocused on setting up our camp in 85-degree heat, resulting in second-degree sunburn and heat exhaustion. My wife was upset but understood my tendency to overwork due to hyperfixation, which had pushed me to dangerous limits.
Later that year, I stumbled across a Facebook reel of a catcher who reminded me of my baseball days. After weeks of searching, I discovered it was Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals. His old-school style captivated me, and I couldn’t stop watching his highlights. When hyperfixation on tasks overwhelmed me, I’d take a 20-minute break to watch his videos, which brought laughter and joy to my day.
In 2022, I shared in a Facebook group that living in a remote area with only internet access made watching games difficult. Satellite TV was an option, but costly. A kind group member, Tony, knowing I was a veteran, sent me a streaming device and covered my first few games of the 2022 season. Thanks to him, I can now watch as many Cardinals games as I want!
That’s how I became a proud St. Louis Cardinals fan—definitely not a Mets or Cubs fan like my cousin!
